Welcome to Data Skills for Public Health. This course covers data sources, common epidemiology designs, validity and the reliability of data.

The course may be taken alone or as part of the CE Online Certificate in Public Health. It is completely online and self paced. Free

Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of data in Public Health.
  • Give examples of how data is used in Public Health.
  • Contrast quantitative versus qualitative data.
  • Define the levels of measurement.
  • Provide examples of health data
  • Describe examples of secondary data
  • Discuss the strengths and limitations of cross-sectional study design.
  • Identify the types of data measures that are typically utilized for cross-sectional study design
  • Discuss the strengths and limitations of cohort study design.
  • Identify the types of data measures that are typically utilized for cohort study design
  • Discuss the strengths and limitations of cross-sectional study design
  • Identify the types of data measures that are typically utilized for cross-sectional study design
  • Describe random vs. systematic error.
  • Interpret a confidence interval.
  • Define and interpret a p-value.
  • Define reliability and give sources of unreliable data
  • Describe selection bias, information bias, and confounding
  • Describe methods of hypothesis testing
  • Describe a meaning of a P-value in data analysis

Audience

This course is appropriate to anyone new to understanding data collection in a public health agency or organization.
